Playing for the South Africa national cricket team against the Netherlands national cricket team, Gibbs took apart part-time leg-spinner Daan van Bunge. On one of the smallest grounds in international cricket, Gibbs launched all six deliveries over the boundary in spectacular fashion.
The Dutch captain Luuk van Troost summed it up honestly afterwards, saying: “Daan bowled some good balls and some bad balls.” Gibbs’ incredible feat also earned him a million-dollar charity payout from tournament sponsor Johnnie Walker.
Chasing an impossible target of 550 runs, New Zealand were 28 without loss at the end of day four. When Nathan Astle came to the crease at 119 for 3, he launched an extraordinary counterattack.
Astle blasted 222 runs off just 168 balls, bringing up the fastest double century in Test history at the time in only 153 balls, breaking the record set a month earlier by Adam Gilchrist.
Despite his heroics, New Zealand fell short, finishing with 423 runs on the day in what Wisden later described as “the most glorious failure in Test cricket history.”
Playing against the Bangladesh national cricket team in an ODI at Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium, Tendulkar scored his 100th international century, becoming the first cricketer ever to reach that landmark.
Ironically, the India national cricket team lost the match. Tendulkar later described the innings as the toughest century of his career, mainly because of the huge expectations surrounding the milestone. It also turned out to be the final century of his international career.
Australia had declared on 556 for 9, powered by a century from Usman Khawaja and a strong contribution from Alex Carey. Pakistan were then bowled out for just 148 in reply, with Mitchell Starc doing most of the damage.
Set a massive target of 506 runs, Pakistan looked certain to lose before Babar produced a masterclass in batting, scoring 196. His resistance brought Pakistan close to an unbelievable draw before he was finally dismissed by Nathan Lyon late on the final day. Pakistan ended on 443 for 7, saving the match.
A powerful fast bowler and capable lower-order batter, Streak carried much of Zimbabwe’s bowling attack during his career. Over time he developed into a genuine allrounder and also captained the national side during a difficult period for Zimbabwean cricket.
After retirement, Streak moved into coaching roles with several teams including the Bangladesh national cricket team. However, in 2021 he received an eight-year ban from the International Cricket Council for breaching the anti-corruption code.
He played cricket for England, while also representing Wales in rugby and hockey, and even won the South Wales Squash Rackets Championship. Known for his adventurous batting style, Turnbull often improvised shots that delighted spectators.
Sadly, his life was cut short when he was killed in action in Normandy during World War II in 1944, aged just 38.
Rana had played six Tests and 25 ODIs for the Bangladesh national cricket team between 2003 and 2006. His sudden death deeply affected the team, who later dedicated their famous World Cup victory over India national cricket team to him.
Born in Singapore, he initially represented the Singapore national cricket team before qualifying to play for the Australia national cricket team. Known for his powerful hitting in T20 leagues around the world, David has starred in tournaments such as the Indian Premier League and the Big Bash League.
