Despite Gotabaya Rajapaksa’s resignation and flight from the country, the unrest in Sri Lanka is by no means normal. On the contrary, it gets worse as the days go by. Unless the country’s crisis ends, the situation is unlikely to return to normal. The biggest crisis is fuel oil. Due to the lack of petrol, the Lankan cricketers cannot go to the practice field with their cars. Meanwhile, the state of emergency has been going on in the country since Monday.
“In this situation, there is a possibility that the Asia Cup starting from August 27 will be held in the United Arab Emirates instead of Sri Lanka”, said the Sri Lanka Cricket Board (SLC).
Cricinfo, a popular media based on cricket, has reported that the Asia Cup will be played in Dubai and Sharjah in the United Arab Emirates.
Apart from political unrest, Sri Lanka’s oil crisis has been shown to be one of the major reasons behind this.
Meanwhile, Pakistan toured Sri Lanka to play two Tests. Already, the third day of the first Test in Gaul is going on. Earlier, Australia played in Sri Lanka.
In this regard, SLC Chief Executive Ashley Mathew de Silva said, ‘Welcoming two teams and welcoming ten teams is not the same. You have to fuel ten different (team) buses. Each team’s luggage van must also be fueled. Fuel should also be provided for the floodlight generator.’
Apart from this, providing security to a large number of foreign visitors is also a difficult challenge in Sri Lanka’s current situation.
Therefore, considering everything including the energy crisis, the Asia Cup will be played in the United Arab Emirates this time. As a result, the Asia Cup will be held in the Emirates for the second time in five years.
In 2018, the last Asia Cup of ODI format was also held in the Emirates. Although in the Emirates, the host of the tournament is Sri Lanka.
2022 Asia Cup will be T20 edition. The main episode is scheduled to run from August 27 to September 11. Prior to this, the qualifiers are scheduled to be held on August 20 to 26.
Five Test playing countries Bangladesh, Afghanistan, India, Pakistan and Sri Lanka will play directly in the main phase. The qualifiers will see a team from Hong Kong, Singapore, Kuwait and the Emirates qualify for the main draw.
