Wright acknowledged the gravity of the decision, stating, “It’s not a decision we’ve taken lightly.” He revealed that Roy had been initially considered for the opening batting position alongside Jonny Bairstow in the World Cup squad. However, the unpredictable nature of sports and the occurrence of injuries forced a change in plans.
“Everyone was told ‘Look, this is the 15 we’re looking to take to the World Cup,’ but unfortunately that’s the ruthless side of sport, isn’t it? It’s not the pleasant side of sport, but changes do have to be made,” Wright explained.
Wright also mentioned that Roy had declined the opportunity to participate in the ODI series against Ireland, scheduled to start this week. Nevertheless, he remains a potential replacement for the World Cup if the need arises.
The 33-year-old Roy, who was a part of England’s victorious World Cup team four years ago, has not yet confirmed whether he will make himself available for the defending champions.
Wright expressed empathy for Roy, stating, “As you can imagine, he’s absolutely gutted, and I wouldn’t expect anything else. I feel for him, as I feel for anyone you leave out.”
“We certainly haven’t ruled him out. For Jason now, I’m sure he’s got some thinking to do over the initial disappointment, but we’ve made clear that if there’s an injury at the top of the order, there’s definitely the option for him to come in as the reserve.”
England is set to face New Zealand in the opening match of the World Cup on October 5.
