The nation carries with it a growing global self-assurance, while cricket, a sport that unites and divides the subcontinent like no other, stands on the verge of joining the Olympic elite.

The Epic Tournament Unfolds

This monumental tournament features 10 nations, engaging in 48 matches over 46 days, hosted at 10 different venues. However, the road to this spectacle has been far from smooth. It was marred by complications after arch-rivals Pakistan contemplated a boycott due to India’s refusal to cross the border for the Asia Cup. Consequently, the World Cup schedule was announced just three months before the opening delivery.

Security concerns for the India-Pakistan clash in Ahmedabad led to the match’s postponement by a day, causing a ripple effect with nine rescheduled fixtures. Pakistan’s arrival in India, their first since the 2016 Twenty20 World Cup, was greeted warmly despite visa issuance merely 48 hours before departure.

Challenges and Uncertainties

Security tensions compelled Pakistan’s warm-up match with New Zealand to be played behind closed doors in a silent 55,000-capacity stadium. Torrential rain further complicated matters, with two warm-up games washed out completely and a third shortened due to overs reduction.

The opening and final matches will be held at Ahmedabad’s Narendra Modi Stadium, the world’s largest cricket arena with over 130,000 seats. Mahatma Gandhi’s former home city, Ahmedabad, is speculated as a potential host for the 2036 Olympics.

Cricket, including the shorter T20 format, may soon become an Olympic sport at the 2028 Games in Los Angeles, pending approval at the International Olympic Committee meeting in Mumbai this month.

India's Rising Global Role

India’s growth on the international stage, coupled with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s efforts, positions the country as a global player. Despite human rights concerns, Modi is courted by the West as a counterbalance to Beijing. His Hindu nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party is expected to win the upcoming general election by a significant margin.

Challenges Ahead

Pakistan, the 1992 World Cup winners, face India, their longstanding World Cup tormentors. However, skipper Babar Azam’s leadership and impressive batting record provide hope for a turnaround.

Defending champions England, led by the destructive Ben Stokes, aim to harness their firepower once again. Bangladesh’s Shakib al Hasan, set for his farewell ODI performance, is a top-ranked allrounder with a remarkable record.

Australia, with veteran David Warner, and South Africa, despite injuries, are determined contenders. Afghanistan brings a formidable lineup of slow bowlers to Indian pitches. Sri Lanka seeks redemption, while the Netherlands completes the line-up after navigating the qualifying round.
