The International Cricket Council (ICC) is set to disclose the schedule for the upcoming World Cup in India on June 27. This announcement comes just four months before the tournament’s commencement, which is a shorter timeframe compared to previous World Cups where schedules were announced over a year in advance.
While media reports suggest that the tournament is expected to begin in October and conclude in November, the specific venues and fixtures are yet to be confirmed. The delay in finalizing the schedule was partly due to the Pakistan Cricket Board’s (PCB) delayed approval of the draft fixture list.
Najam Sethi, former chairman of the PCB management committee, mentioned that the approval or disapproval of the World Cup schedule lies with the government, similar to how the Indian government determines the team’s travel arrangements.
The PCB had also made a request to the ICC to change the venues for their matches against Australia and Afghanistan in order to gain a competitive advantage. They proposed swapping the locations, suggesting that playing Australia in Chennai and Afghanistan in Bengaluru would make Pakistan the favorites in both matches.
The PCB’s internal note stated, “Ideally, we can switch these around. Australia in Chennai and Afghanistan in Bengaluru would make us obvious favorites in both matches.”
Usually, venue changes during ICC events occur only in cases of security threats. It remains to be seen if the ICC will accommodate their request.
Overall, the ICC’s announcement of the World Cup schedule in India, just months away from the event, is highly anticipated. The final details, including venues and fixtures, will soon be unveiled.
