Maxwell has not represented his country since his participation in an ODI against India in Wankhede in March. Furthermore, he has not participated in any cricket, at any level, since making a solitary appearance in an English County Championship match for Warwickshire at the beginning of July.
Initially, Maxwell was slated to feature in the T20I segment of Australia’s ongoing tour of South Africa, but persistent ankle soreness forced him to return home.
Explaining the situation, Maxwell stated, “I couldn’t have predicted how much pain I would experience once I arrived in South Africa. Even when I trained that day, I felt fine. There were no issues. Something just got pinched. I think one of the tendons around my ankle became inflamed, causing some swelling. This, in turn, resulted in pain.”
“Hopefully, the cortisone treatment will alleviate this issue, and I can return to where I was in terms of fitness just before heading to South Africa. We need to be more cautious going forward. I’ll ensure that my preparation is better managed, especially in the lead-up to long flights. I’m already back in the gym, so I’ll probably resume full training this week. It won’t be a long turnaround, but I need to acknowledge that I haven’t completely overcome the initial injury hurdle yet,” Maxwell added.
