Expanding the cricketing horizons from the historic City of Holkars to the revered City of Scindias, the Madhya Pradesh Cricket Association (MPCA) has initiated the construction of a cutting-edge cricket stadium in Gwalior. Recent viral images showcased the ongoing development of this cricketing marvel in Gwalior, Madhya Pradesh, signaling its anticipated completion by 2024. This upcoming international stadium, managed by MPCA, marks the state’s second international venue, promising a significant addition to its sporting landscape.
Nestled near Shankarpur Village off the AB Road (Agra-Mumbai National Highway), the stadium’s design encompasses six floodlights and eight entry gates, including designated access for media, cricketers, MPCA members, and staff. Upon completion, the stadium’s seating capacity is projected to range from 30,000 to 45,000, positioning it as a formidable venue for international cricket. A pivotal Ranji Trophy clash between MP and Odisha is slated for January 12 to January 15, 2024, serving as a litmus test before the stadium opens its gates for global cricketing action.
Gwalior’s cricketing legacy was previously hosted at the Captain Roop Singh Stadium, situated approximately 12 kilometers away. This historic ground witnessed its last match between India and South Africa in 2010, etching a memorable chapter in cricketing lore as Sachin Tendulkar scripted a remarkable double century in just 147 balls.
However, following the Board of Control for Cricket in India’s directive mandating state associations to manage their stadiums, the Roop Singh Stadium, initially a hockey arena converted to a cricket field in the 1980s, became ineligible for hosting international fixtures. Consequently, the forthcoming stadium in Gwalior emerges as the state’s second international cricketing venue.
Notably, MPCA already oversees the Holkar Stadium in Indore, the sole recognized stadium in Madhya Pradesh to date. To accommodate more matches, various private colleges and grounds in Indore, including Daly International School and College Cricket Ground, Emerald High School Cricket Ground, Yeshwant Club Ground, and Nehru Stadium, Central Gymkhana Ground, hosted domestic fixtures for tournaments such as Syed Mushtaq Ali (SMAT) and Ranji Trophy matches. Additionally, cities like Ratlam, Ujjain, Mhow, and Bhopal in MP have previously hosted cricket matches.
The inception of the new stadium in Gwalior not only elevates the cricketing infrastructure within the nation but also fortifies the domestic facilities in Madhya Pradesh. This strategic move will enable the state association to host multiple matches, alleviating the burden on Holkar Stadium situated at Janjeerwala Square, New Palasia.
