In the ICC World Test Championship Final held at The Oval, Australia and India have both been handed substantial fines due to their slow over rates. India faced a 209-run defeat to an exceptional Australia side in south London on the final day of the match.
After the conclusion of the game, it was confirmed that India would lose all of their match fees as a result of their slow over rate, while Australia would be docked 80 percent of their match fees. India fell short by five overs when time allowances were considered, whereas Australia was found to be four overs behind. As per Article 2.22 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel, players face a 20 percent fine of their match fee for each over their team fails to bowl within the designated time.
Furthermore, India’s Shubman Gill will face an additional sanction for seemingly criticizing the umpire’s decision to give him out on the fourth day of the Test. This breach of Article 2.7, which pertains to public criticism or inappropriate comments regarding incidents in international matches, resulted in Gill receiving a 15 percent fine on top of his previous penalty. Consequently, he will have to pay back a portion of his match fee, with his total fines amounting to 115 percent.
Television umpire Richard Kettleborough had determined that Cameron Green’s catch to dismiss Gill was taken cleanly. Later in the day, Gill took to social media to post a message that seemed to question the decision.
On the fifth day, before lunch, seven wickets fell, shattering India’s hopes of a remarkable victory on a sunny and humid Sunday morning in south London. An additional 15 minutes were allocated at the end of the session to secure the final wicket, and Nathan Lyon achieved that by dismissing Mohammed Siraj, securing the World Test Championship title for Australia.
