This unfortunate setback comes after he missed the third ODI with back spasms. Nortje underwent scans and specialist consultations, with plans to resume bowling under the Proteas’ medical team’s supervision over the weekend. In his only appearance during the series, Nortje struggled in the second ODI, conceding 58 runs in five wicketless overs as Australia posted a formidable total of 392 for 8 in Bloemfontein.
South Africa’s captain, Temba Bavuma, will be absent from the fourth ODI in Centurion as a precautionary measure. Bavuma is nursing a right adductor strain. Despite being the leading run-scorer for South Africa in the series, amassing 217 runs with scores of 57, 46, and an unbeaten 114 in the first three games, his well-being takes precedence.
In Bavuma’s absence, Aiden Markram will take over the captaincy duties for the under-pressure South African side. The team currently trails 2-1 in the five-match ODI series against Australia, having already lost the preceding T20Is 3-0.
