Babar Azam Feels Pressure, Wasim Akram’s Stance Surprises Pakistani Great Yousuf

After the India vs. Pakistan match in the Cricket World Cup 2023, there has been a lot of criticism directed at Babar Azam and his team.

Critics Question Babar Azam’s Leadership
After the India vs. Pakistan match in the Cricket World Cup 2023, there has been a lot of criticism directed at Babar Azam and his team. Some critics even suggested that Shaheen Shah Afridi should replace Babar as the captain due to concerns about his leadership skills. Notably, Shoaib Malik was among those questioning Babar’s ability to lead the team, and this raised concerns.

Mohammad Yousuf Stands by Babar Azam
However, Pakistan cricket legend Mohammad Yousuf did not support these suggestions, especially during the ongoing tournament. Speaking on the matter, Yousuf not only defended Babar but also questioned the great Wasim Akram for not intervening when Shoaib Malik made these comments.

Shoaib Malik’s Suggestion
During a discussion on Pakistan’s defeat to India in the World Cup on a TV channel, Shoaib Malik expressed his belief that Babar should focus solely on his batting and step down as captain.

“Let me be clear. In my opinion, Babar should give up captaincy, as I’ve mentioned in previous interviews. While it’s just my opinion, a lot of thought has gone into it. As a player, Babar has immense potential for personal and team success. If Babar decides to resign, I think Shaheen Shah Afridi should be the next ODI captain,” Malik stated on A-Sports.

Yousuf’s Counterargument
Yousuf disagreed with Malik’s views and emphasized that such discussions should not occur during the World Cup. He pointed to the example of former Pakistan skipper Imran Khan, who led the team to victory in the 1992 World Cup after experiencing failures in 1983 and 1987.

“During the World Cup, I don’t believe anyone should raise such matters. Furthermore, Imran Khan captained in 1983 and 1987 and faced defeats before succeeding in 1992. A good player should be given ample time as captain,” Yousuf explained on Samaa TV.

Yousuf continued to support Babar’s captaincy, stating, “Babar is the captain because of his capabilities, not because of his connections to the PCB chairman. He is a genuine leader. Criticizing him in this way is detrimental to Pakistan and to him, especially considering the immense pressure following the loss to India. I’m surprised that Wasim Akram, who was present during the discussion, didn’t intervene.”
