1921 – The Birth of a Fast-Bowling Legend: Ray Lindwall

One of the greatest quicks ever, Ray Lindwall was born on this day. A master of swing, pace, and precision, Lindwall became the leader of Australia’s fearsome “Invincibles” attack in 1948. He famously took 6 for 20 at The Oval, skittling England for just 52 — their lowest Ashes total in England. Astonishingly, 43% of his 228 Test wickets were bowled, proof of his perfect line and length. More than a bowler, Lindwall defined the art of modern fast bowling. He passed away in 1996, leaving behind a golden legacy.

1862 – The Tragic Genius: Johnny Briggs

Born this day, Johnny Briggs was one of England’s earliest spin magicians. A left-arm spinner with incredible control, he claimed 118 Test wickets at a remarkable strike rate — one every 45 balls! Against South Africa in 1888-89, he recorded an unbelievable 15 wickets for 28 runs, bowling 14 of them. But his life took a sad turn — an epileptic fit in 1899 led to his confinement in an asylum, where he would still imagine himself bowling each day. He passed away in 1902, remembered as both a genius and a tragedy of his time.

1996 – South Africa’s Record Win in Nairobi

South Africa registered their biggest ODI win at the time, crushing Kenya by 202 runs in the KCA Centenary Tournament. They posted 305/8, before Allan Donald tore through Kenya with career-best figures of 6 for 23, bowling them out in just 25 overs. Pure dominance from the Proteas!

2021 – India vs Australia Women: A Classic Day-Night Test

The first India-Australia Women’s Test in 15 years ended in a dramatic draw at Carrara, Gold Coast. Despite rain interruptions, both sides played positive cricket — three innings were declared! India held the upper hand, powered by Smriti Mandhana’s elegant century and a strong 136-run lead.
For Australia, Ellyse Perry reached two major milestones — her 300th international wicket and a fourth consecutive fifty in Tests.

1952 – Gary Troup and New Zealand’s Historic Triumph

Born this day, Gary Troup was instrumental in New Zealand’s first-ever home Test series win, a 1–0 victory over West Indies in 1979-80. He took 18 wickets at just 20.61, helping New Zealand achieve a triumph 50 years in the making — and one that West Indies wouldn’t let happen again until 1994-95.

1995 – Sri Lanka Stun Pakistan in Rawalpindi

Fresh off a Test series win, Sri Lanka piled more misery on Pakistan by sealing the ODI series 2–1 with a four-wicket win in a rain-shortened match.
Arjuna Ranatunga led from the front with a calm 42, earning the Player of the Match award and showing once again why Sri Lanka were becoming a force in world cricket.

1999 – Gibbs Leads South Africa to Glory

Herschelle Gibbs smashed a brilliant 84 as South Africa defeated India (without Sachin Tendulkar) by 26 runs in the LG Cup final in Nairobi.
It was yet another one-day trophy for the dominant Proteas of the late 1990s.

2007 – Mark Boucher Breaks the Record

In Karachi, Mark Boucher stumped Umar Gul to surpass Ian Healy’s record for the most Test dismissals by a wicketkeeper — 395. Boucher reached the feat in just 103 Tests, 16 fewer than Healy, before later regaining the record from Adam Gilchrist in 2008. His name remains synonymous with consistency, grit, and world-class glovework.
